Our annual photography contest will be open through December 12, so you have just under a month to submit your favorite images that show what you love about living in the D.C. metro area. Don’t have that perfect picture yet? There’s still time to go out there and get it! Perhaps you’ll find some inspiration from previous years’ winners or some Friday Links…

  • BlackRock Center for the Arts is having a gallery reception tomorrow for the opening of Captured Light: Current Photographic Processes, a regional juried photography exhibition, free, 3 p.m.
  • 52 O Street Studios will be holding its open house tomorrow from 12-6 p.m., and Street Meet DC will be there to check it out.
  • Join the DC Street Photography Collective (DCSPC) at Slash Run on November 20 at 8 p.m. for a night of photography featuring a presentation by NYC-based street photographer Reuben Radding and a photo critique with Radding and members of the DCSPC, $10.
  • A D.C.-based nonprofit is looking for a photographer who specializes and/or has experience in product photography, specifically photographing books for marketing purposes, i.e. print, web, social, etc. This is not a one time gig, they are looking for a person they can work with throughout the year on various book publications. If this is you, or if you know someone, please email ccondayan@apa.org with a link to your product portfolio and rates.
  • There are still spots available for Momenta Workshops’ Marketing for Photographers at Lost Origins Gallery tomorrow, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., $180 with 50% of the proceeds being donated to two photo-related charities.
  • As news of the latest fake TIME cover featuring State Department official Mina Chang circulates, TIME shares some of the ways you can identify a fake cover.
  • The deadline for the Falls Church Arts fine art photography show has been extended to midnight on November 24.

In case you missed it, our annual photography contest is officially open for entries! We want to see the best images you’ve taken that showcase our nation’s capital as the place where we live, work, and love. Gather your favorite photos you’ve taken so far or get inspired to capture new ones. You have until December 12 at midnight to submit to the contest.

  • Head to Dupont Underground tonight for the opening reception of the World Press Photo Exhibition, 6:30-10:00 p.m., $25-35. The exhibit represents the best visual journalism of the past year with images exploring a wide range of topics.
  • American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center’s late fall opening reception tomorrow from 6-9 p.m. includes two photography exhibits.
  • David Sorrenti’s mother reflects on her late son, whose photography she’s anthologized in a new book.
  • Join local photographer and Exposed alum, Amanda Archibald, for a Mobile Photography Workshop on Saturday, Nov. 23 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Steadfast Supply in Ballston Quarter, $40. The course covers everything from capturing powerful pictures on your camera phone to using the most essential editing apps.
  • Leica Store D.C. is hosting a Leica Q Owners Workshop on Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., $199.
  • Stop Motion is seeking documentary photography from D.C., Maryland, and Virginia for their final volume of the year.
  • A new book explores what it was like to photograph Audrey Hepburn and includes rare photos.

Our annual photography contest opens next week. That’s right…next week! Join us for a kickoff happy hour on Thursday, November 7 from 6-8 p.m. at The Crown & Crow and get ready to submit your best images showcasing the Washington, D.C. area where we live, work, love, and win sports championships!

  • Studio Gallery’s annual photography exhibition features 15 DC-based photographers who investigate the nature of Lost/Found. There will be a First Friday reception tonight from 6-8 p.m. and an artist’s reception on November 9 from 4-6 p.m.
  • Two photography exhibits are opening at the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center on November 9—Dark World Photographs by Frank Hallam Day and Radical Link: A New Community of Women, 1855-2020.
  • Soccer player Mario Balotelli kicked a photographer’s camera from its tripod after he was subbed off during a game. 
  • The Royal Meteorological Society announced the winner of its Weather Photographer of the Year award: Gareth Mon Jones with his image of a cloud inversion filling a valley in Snowdonia.
  • Roberto Fernández Ibáñez will open his exhibition “Visions and Reflections” on November 5 at the Uruguayan Embassy, and he will give a free presentation at Photoworks on November 7 at 7 p.m.
  • Readers of the Washington Post share some love for the awesome job photographers have done covering the Nationals’ postseason run. 
  • An aerial photographer and pilot based in Kalispell flies a bush plane with 12 cameras mounted to it and one in the cockpit, capturing images and video of obscure places with the goal of inspiring others to love the places he does too.
  • Join ASMP DC and Smithsonian American Art Museum for an artist talk with photographer David Burnett on Tuesday, 7 p.m. Free to the public with limited seating; pre-registration strongly recommended.

As the end of the year draws closer, we have begun preparations for our 14th annual photography show and have some exciting updates we’ll be sharing soon. For now, we wanted to let everyone know that our annual photography contest will be happening earlier than usual this year. We’ll open the contest with a kickoff happy hour in early November, so get ready and stay tuned!

  • The opening reception for David Burnett’s “We Choose to Go to the Moon” exhibit at the Leica Store DC is tonight from 7:00-9:00 p.m., free.
  • StreetMeetDC is hosting a photo event at Soleado Lavender Farm tomorrow from 1:00-7:30 p.m., $25.
  • Cole Davis documents life in Brownsville, a neighborhood in Brooklyn that is often referred to as the “Murder Capital of New York,” aiming to share the beauty and depth he finds.
  • Winning images of the Nikon Small World photography contest include a turtle embryo, a snowflake, and a pregnant plankton.
  • At a studio in Kandahar, Magnum photographer Thomas Dworzak found unexpected photos of Taliban fighters.
  • The DC Street Photography Collective, DCSPC, invites DC area photographers to participate in a critique with Reuben Radding and members of DCSPC that will happen at their photography event on Nov. 20 at Slash Run.  To be considered for the critique, submit 3-5 photographs to thedcspc@gmail.com by Sunday Nov. 3rd at midnight.
  • Ilford announced a new film for both 35mm and 120 that is sensitive to all colors in the visible light spectrum apart from red. 
  • Our friends over at DC’s youth photography and social justice non-profit Critical Exposure are hiring for four full-time positions—Program Manager, Program Coordinator, Operations Manager, and Communications Coordinator.
  • The Guardian’s photography editors are rethinking the images they use in their coverage of climate-related news.

  • Learn about cyanotype prints and make your own at IA&A at Hillyer tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., $15-20. 
  • Historians discovered one of the marines in the iconic Iwo Jima photo had been misidentified for over 70 years.
  • Jeff Bridges shares personal photos taken with a Widelux camera on film sets in his new book that came out this week.
  • Photographer and creative photo retoucher Jim Lind incorporates his pet cats into photos for his “Family Vacation” series. 
  • Falls Church Arts issued a call for artists for a fine art photography show to be held in their gallery in January 2020. The deadline for entries is Nov. 17.
  • Winners of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition were announced this week.
  • The DC Street Photography Collective will be hosting an event on November 20 at Slash Run with a presentation by NYC street photographer Reuben Radding and a critique. Tickets are $10.
  • Three photographers received awards as part of the Leica Women Foto Project to support personal projects relevant to today’s social and political climate.
