  • Join Farrah Skeiky for the opening reception for Present Tense: DC Punk and DIY Right Now tomorrow night from 6-8 p.m. 
  • The Uncommon District asked people to share their favorite images of D.C. from 2019. Local photographers, including several Exposed alum, captured everything from music to sports, monuments to animals, portraits to every day scenes.
  • An art critic with the Washington Post encourages us to look at Iran through the same lens as its best photographers.
  • Join Rhonisha D. Franklin for the Profile Noire Artist Talk Series where she will be discussing her exhibit with guest panelists including Exposed alum Kirth Bobb, tomorrow at 6 p.m. at Charles Sumner School Museum & Archives.
  • While many photographers have photographed NYC in black and white, Saul Leiter chose color film to document the city, especially the few blocks around his home in the East Village.
  • The Studio Arts Program within the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design at The George Washington University is hiring an Assistant Professor of Photography.
  • On Feb. 20, the DC Street Photography Collective, DCSPC, is hosting a night of photography at Slash Run featuring Darrow Montgomery. Local photographers are invited to participate in a critique with Montgomery and members of DCSPC. To be considered, submit 3-5 photographs (2000 pixels on the long edge at 72 DPI) to thedcspc@gmail.com by Feb. 2 at midnight. 
  • This PHmuseum roundup includes various photography contests and opportunities accepting submissions in January, from Pictures of the Year International to Magnum Foundation Fellowship and more.

  • Present Tense: DC Punk and DIY Right Now, featuring the work of Farrah Skeiky, opens on Friday, January 18 at Transformer with a reception from 6-8 p.m. 
  • Initial reports indicate photography trends for 2020 will include more “real and raw” images, bold colors, and use of photography to support more causes. 
  • 202Creates is accepting applications for The Creative Affairs Office Residency Program: Session 5, Winter 2020. Applications are due by the end of the month.
  • A photographer visiting Qatar in late December captured an annular eclipse at sunrise that took on a more sinister look given the conditions of the day.
  • In need of a new headshot? The Vibe Room is offering free headshots at WeWork Chinatown on January 23 from 5:00-7:00 p.m.
  • Join Washington DC History & Culture for a guided tour of the Rosa Parks exhibition and Library of Congress next Saturday, January 18 from 9:15-11:15 a.m., $10.
  • A traffic camera in Montreal captured footage of a snowy owl looking for a spot to perch.
  • The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art is hosting a talk on how social media is changing the social conditions for women in Iran and the role of the camera in art and daily life, this Sunday from 4-5 p.m.

Earlier this week, we announced the winning images of our 14th annual photo contest. We can’t wait to see all of the photos on display at Touchstone Gallery when our show opens on Wednesday, February 19. Save the date! We are also excited to announce that the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities has awarded Exposed DC (Ten Miles Square) a grant to support our annual exhibition. We’ll have more updates soon, so stay tuned. 

  • Join Geoff Livingston for a Capital Photography Center class on night photography at Georgetown GLOW on December 28, 4:30-6:00 p.m., $99.
  • On January 8, the National Museum of Women in the Arts is hosting an evening with artist Janaina Tschäpe who will be discussing her “100 Little Deaths” series, $20-30 to reserve a spot.
  • Focus on the Story is accepting proposals for presenting at their 2020 Visual Storytelling Summit slated for May 28-31. Submit your proposal by January 17 to share your idea for an engaging, inspirational, and thought-provoking talk.
  • Editors at The New York Times cull down 500,000 photos to 116 for their annual visual review highlighting the biggest news events and strongest images. And we all thought curating the Exposed DC annual show was a challenge; that’s a lot of culling!
  • St. Louis native Adrian Octavius Walker was selected by The National Portrait Gallery as one of seven artists around the country to win the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition. His portrait “Black Virgin Mary” is currently on display and will tour galleries across the U.S. starting in 2021.  
  • Elsa Bleda moved around a lot ever since she was a child, and she was inspired to capture what she saw in the various places she lived, which eventually turned into a full-time passion as seen in her project “Fragments of Nightscapes: Johannesburg.”
  • The New Yorker shares their favorite photographs from 2019, from photojournalism to creative imagery accompanying short fiction pieces.

In case you missed it, we’ve extended the deadline for our annual photo contest to give you a little extra time to share your best images of the D.C. metro area with us. You now have until 5 p.m. TOMORROW to get those entries submitted. We can’t wait to see all of your submissions and look forward to announcing the winners next week.   • D.C. photographer Steven M. Cummings captured “The Last of Chocolate City” through black-and-white vignettes.
  • StreetMeetDC is closing out 2019 with a meet at the National Zoo for this year’s Zoo Lights on Saturday at 4 p.m.

  • Kodak is discontinuing Kodakit, the on-demand photography service launched in 2017 as the “Uber of photography.”
  • Archaeologists found bottles of hair dye and other hair care products from a civil war photography studio.

Have you entered our annual photography contest yet? Just a few more days until the contest closes; don’t let the deadline sneak up on you! Show us your unique perspective of this city we call home by December 12 for a chance to be part of our exhibit celebrating local photography.

  • Tom Wolff and Frank Van Riper will be at Photoworks during Glen Echo Park Winter Fest on December 14 to take your holiday portrait for free with a suggested donation of $25 to Photoworks. 
  • Winners of Image Quest 2019, the Red Bull Illume contest focused on sports and action photography, captured everything from a surfer kicking out from the barrel through a wave to a skydiver on a “megaswing” attached to a hot air balloon.
  • Fujifilm opened a new store concept in London featuring selfie pods, photography studios, workshops, high-end gear, and more.
  • A new book “Magnum Streetwise” follows the evolution of street photography as recorded by Magnum Photos with over 300 images from the 1930s to the present day.
  • The World Press Photo exhibit at Dupont Underground closes on Sunday. Visiting hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, and general admission is $15 with a reduced rate of $10 for military, students, groups, etc.
  • View shortlisted images from the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition and vote for your favorite to help select the winner of the Lumix People’s Choice Award.
  • Billy Meier’s UFO images, seen on The X-Files, are up for auction as part of a sale dedicated to space photography.
