  • Join Photoworks for their monthly Coffee & Critique session this Sunday at 10:00 a.m., free. Must have images to attend.
  • The American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP)  announced an exclusive collaboration with PetaPixel to bring the latest industry news and opinion to a new weekly show as part of the recently launched ASMP Academy.
  • Cristina Mittermeier, a marine biologist and activist who pioneered the field of conservation photography, shares how photography and storytelling can turn apathy into climate action.
  • Winners of the environmental photographer of the year competition, organized by environmental and water management charity CIWEM and WaterBear, have been announced. You can vote for the people’s choice award through December 1.
  • Lafayette College in Pennsylvania has been gifted a collection of more than 1,600 civil rights movement-era photographs worth $10 million.
  • Two cousins salvaged a film-development machine that is now part of their Take It Easy Film Lab that processes more than 200 rolls a day for clients garnered almost entirely from Instagram.
  • Josef Koudelka donated more than 2,000 photographs to four institutions in the Czech Republic; early in his career, he was a secret dissident documenting life behind the Iron Curtain and smuggling his negatives out to be distributed by Magnum Photos.

Exposed DC and Focus on the Story are launching a monthly projection show, featuring the work of D.C.-area photographers. The projection will be shown during the evenings at metrobar, a new outdoor venue and event space in northeast D.C. We’re looking to showcase images that explore life in the D.C. metro area. Tag your Instagram images #ArtAtMetrobarDC to be considered for the monthly exhibit. 

  • Join WPOW tomorrow from 4-7 p.m. in Mount Pleasant for the opening of their 13th Annual Juried Exhibition, including presentations by two winners who will share insights about their work. 
  • Visit the “Coffee & Critique Exhibition” in person at Photoworks as well as online through November 29. A free artist talk will be held this Sunday at 7 p.m. on Zoom.
  • Winners of the Feature Shoot Emerging Photography Awards 2021 include the return of Black ballroom, storm chasing, and more.
  • Black Women Photographers (BWP) is now accepting submissions of original work. To be considered, you must identify as a Black woman or a Black non-binary photographer and be a member of BWP.
  • Olaf Otto Becker’s photo series documents the melting glaciers along 4,000 kilometers of Greenland’s coast.
  • Winners of this year’s British Ecological Society photography competition have been announced.
  • A photojournalist with the Pensacola News Journal documented a highly atypical police chase when law enforcement spent an hour trying to chase down a runaway potbellied pig.

  • Critical Exposure is looking for program facilitators to join their team. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis with a priority application deadline of November 1.
  • Mark your calendars for WPOW’s 13th Annual Juried Exhibition opening event at Lost Origins Outside in Mount Pleasant on November 6 from 4-7 p.m.
  • The Siena International Photo Awards photo of the year features a Syrian father who lost his leg in a bombing and his son who was born without limbs.
  • Photo Matters, a new virtual offering from Photoworks, will be hosted by Steve Greenberg this Sunday from 10 a.m. to noon, free.
  • Flickr and LEGO are teaming up for a new photo contest; the deadline for entries is November 1.
  • Dutch photographer Hannie Heere captured a baby barn owl running across the grass.
  • Photograph cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin with Washington Photo Safari to avoid the springtime crowds and capture vibrant colors on November 6, $79.
  • Canon announced a new “Moments That Matter” photography competition that aims to provide a platform for people to harness the power of visual storytelling to spark positive Change.

  • The actor who played picture-snapper Colin Creevey in Harry Potter is a real-life professional photographer.
  • The FAA temporarily grounded news organizations’ drones being used to document the federal response to the arrival of Haitian migrants at the southern border.
  • Unclaimed Afghan studio portraits bear witness to decades of history.
  • Coffee & Critiques returns in-person at Photoworks this Sunday at 10:00 a.m. Seats are limited and reserved for participants with images to share. 
  • Fine art photographer Roland Miller has been documenting America’s space program for more than 30 years; his latest book focuses on the waning years of NASA’s shuttle program.

  • “Official/Unofficial: Photographs of Washington DC,” an online exhibition at Glen Echo Photoworks juried by Sharon Farmer, features several familiar names and showcases multiple facets of the city.
  • From October 11 through November 21, the Second Annual Latela Curatorial Women in the Arts exhibition will feature the work of 70 artists at six satellite locations as well as online. 
  • Brookside Gardens hosts rotating monthly art exhibits and currently features work by photographers Amanda Coelho and Keith Kozloff. 
  • FotoFilmic has issued a call for entries for film-based and analogue projects for JRNL 11 to be published by historian and curator Corey Keller. The submission deadline is October 31. 
  • It’s the last day to apply for the Leica Women Foto Project Award or Mentor Program.
  • Critical Exposure is currently looking for a development manager and communications coordinator to join their team. 
  • Sign up for Photoworks classes happening in October and November.
  • Edward Keating, who contributed to the body of work that brought The New York Times a Pulitzer Prize for photography for its 9/11 coverage and later prompted a debate on journalistic ethics, died at age 65.
