I look at photos all day, every day, and whether it’s images from my own work or pictures from other photographers, I absolutely love what I do. Sometimes, after a few grueling weeks of editing, I find myself in a steady rhythm of image-looking. Then, I find an image like this one and suddenly I feel my brain churning harder as I try to comprehend the visual language. Here, photographer Albert Ting takes advantage of the image’s natural, compositional mystery and rotates the frame, causing more confusion and intrigue.

Ting has several images from the opening of Dupont Underground—an abandoned trolley station under Dupont Circle—that has been turned into an exhibition space.

The multidimensionality in this image by Frank Hallam Day is confusing at first but holds me inside the image. I am continuously bouncing between different planes—with each pause my eye is excited and lifted by different spots of light.

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Pope Leighey House in Alexandria is one of my favorite spots in the area. Juan does a great job of capturing the mood and tone of this fascinating, historic house.

This portrait by photographer Kaitlin Jencso is a wonderful example of how to use odd lighting. The harsh overhead shed light creates a gorgeous mixture of highlights and shadows. It is highly contrasted but in parts the glow falls off her brother gradually.
