Messay Shoakena made this lovely image near the canal in Georgetown. The angle of the shadow, the runner coming out of it, and the rich texture of the wall all add up to a nicely composed photo.

It is particularly weird that we can only see the bottom half of this man, while he leans into the crevice between two buildings. But it is the second realization, that a large stream of water is trickling out beneath his legs, which gives this image from John Ulaszek its “huh?” factor.

I’ve shot the occasional DC Rollergirl photo, so I know a good one when I see it. The falling of the light on the skater’s face and upper body, whether naturally occurring or cleverly set up is what really makes this beautiful image from Pablo Benavente. The subtle rendition of the cluttered surroundings balances perfectly with the skater’s focused expression and the smooth skin tones of her arms, shoulders and back.

So many choices! Flickr user ep_jhu shows us that a familiar subject, placed in an unfamiliar way can make for an interesting photograph. This layout at Barmini makes the toilet paper look like part of a carnival game. He also showed great restraint in not unraveling them all, or dropping a large disc on the top and screaming, “Plinko!”
