Have you signed up for our special Exposed DC sponsored week of free photography classes with Knowledge Commons DC? Most of our classes are waitlisted (you can still sign up and we’ll let you know if a spot opens up) but you can still get a seat to make your own camera obscura next Friday. And be sure to join us for our monthly happy hour — this time with the wonderful KCDC folks — at Iota in Clarendon on Monday, November 17. Find out how you can sign up or get involved with future KCDC sessions, meet the Exposed DC team, or just come have a drink with fellow photography lovers.

  • This is the last weekend for FotoWeek DC, so be sure to check out our recommendations on what to see. We also have a review of the contest winners written by Caroline Space.
  • Want tips on how to be a better photo assistant? APA DC is hosting a Photo Assistant workshop next week.
  • Martin Schoeller discusses a selection of high profile shoots from his new book Portraits, including the story of pro skater Tony Hawk leaping from his kitchen counter at the crack of dawn and Quentin Tarantino apparently blissed out in a sea of doves.
  • New Zealand freelance photographer Amos Chapple used a drone to photograph the Kremlin. What’s Russian for cojones?
  • Photos from “Dark Tourism” sites around the world. That ought to bring you down.
  • Italian “paparazzo” Umberto Pizzi says he photographs to tell stories, not to court celebrities. Alexa Keefe interviewed Pizzi for National Geographic.
  • From geishas and waterfalls to the Berlin Wall and 9/11: How one photographer captured 60 years of historic images. Thomas Hoepker’s photos are collected in a retrospective called Wanderlust.
  • The first Hasselblad in space went on the auction block on Thursday. It fetched $275,000!
  • Speaking of cool space photos, did you see the first ever photo from the surface of a comet?
  • And finally, add being presented with a white tiger to the list of Presidential perks.

How Was This Year’s FotoWeekDC Festival?

FotoWeekDC just closed its sixth annual international photography festival last weekend. Like any large event that tries to be inclusive of an entire community, it has both lovers and haters. One common complaint – that it didn’t focus enough on local photography – was addressed this year with FotoNOMA, which hosted work from a number of D.C. groups like InstantDC and the STRATA Collective. No one can get to all the exhibits, lectures, and workshops that FotoWeekDC offers each year, so we asked some of you what your favorite – and least favorite – parts were:

Jeff Norman:

I loved the whole FotoNOMA exhibition, but I think the women from WPOW had many strong images the invoked a lot emotion. And the Private Moon in America series from photographer Leonid Tishkov was brilliant! I also loved the images from the photographers from Strata Collective.

News and Notes

Shutdown by Brett Davis
Shutdown by Brett Davis
  • Our calendar is bursting with events over the next few weeks. Make sure to check for changes to any venues due to the government shutdown. A talk this Thursday with Gabriela Bulisova hosted by Photoworks has moved due to the closure of Glen Echo Park. While the National Gallery of Art and the Smithsonian are also closed, the Corcoran is still open and David Levinthal’s War Games is on display until October 27.
  • Speaking of events, FotoWeek is just around the corner. Most exhibits and FotoWeek central do not open until November 1, but now is the time to sign up for workshops or portfolio reviews.
  • Thank you all for your great feedback on our Local Resource Guides. We have updated our Studio Rental Guide with three new locations, thanks to your help. If you know of a printing location we can add to our Printing Services Guide, please let us know.
  • Our Flickr pool now has over 1600 photos! If you would like to be part of our amazing pool of local photographers please join our Flickr Group.
  • We are looking for contributors! If you would like to write for Exposed DC, whether to do exhibit reviews, artist interviews, news updates, or all of the above, please get in touch with us.
