As the end of the year draws closer, we have begun preparations for our 14th annual photography show and have some exciting updates we’ll be sharing soon. For now, we wanted to let everyone know that our annual photography contest will be happening earlier than usual this year. We’ll open the contest with a kickoff happy hour in early November, so get ready and stay tuned!

  • The opening reception for David Burnett’s “We Choose to Go to the Moon” exhibit at the Leica Store DC is tonight from 7:00-9:00 p.m., free.
  • StreetMeetDC is hosting a photo event at Soleado Lavender Farm tomorrow from 1:00-7:30 p.m., $25.
  • Cole Davis documents life in Brownsville, a neighborhood in Brooklyn that is often referred to as the “Murder Capital of New York,” aiming to share the beauty and depth he finds.
  • Winning images of the Nikon Small World photography contest include a turtle embryo, a snowflake, and a pregnant plankton.
  • At a studio in Kandahar, Magnum photographer Thomas Dworzak found unexpected photos of Taliban fighters.
  • The DC Street Photography Collective, DCSPC, invites DC area photographers to participate in a critique with Reuben Radding and members of DCSPC that will happen at their photography event on Nov. 20 at Slash Run.  To be considered for the critique, submit 3-5 photographs to thedcspc@gmail.com by Sunday Nov. 3rd at midnight.
  • Ilford announced a new film for both 35mm and 120 that is sensitive to all colors in the visible light spectrum apart from red. 
  • Our friends over at DC’s youth photography and social justice non-profit Critical Exposure are hiring for four full-time positions—Program Manager, Program Coordinator, Operations Manager, and Communications Coordinator.
  • The Guardian’s photography editors are rethinking the images they use in their coverage of climate-related news.

  • Learn about cyanotype prints and make your own at IA&A at Hillyer tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., $15-20. 
  • Historians discovered one of the marines in the iconic Iwo Jima photo had been misidentified for over 70 years.
  • Jeff Bridges shares personal photos taken with a Widelux camera on film sets in his new book that came out this week.
  • Photographer and creative photo retoucher Jim Lind incorporates his pet cats into photos for his “Family Vacation” series. 
  • Falls Church Arts issued a call for artists for a fine art photography show to be held in their gallery in January 2020. The deadline for entries is Nov. 17.
  • Winners of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition were announced this week.
  • The DC Street Photography Collective will be hosting an event on November 20 at Slash Run with a presentation by NYC street photographer Reuben Radding and a critique. Tickets are $10.
  • Three photographers received awards as part of the Leica Women Foto Project to support personal projects relevant to today’s social and political climate.

  • “Women: A Photography Exhibition” opens at the National Geographic Museum on October 22.
  • The WNBA and Red Hook Labs paired five female photography students of color from Brooklyn with athletes for their latest campaign.
  • Researchers have developed a lens that is a thousand times thinner than regular lenses.
  • Reuben Wu captures remote landscapes illuminated by geometric drone flight paths.
  • Computational photography is being used in newer mobile phones to improve pictures you can take with your phone.

Join us tonight for an opening reception to celebrate our latest exhibition in the Crystal City Fotowalk that features images from all over the United States taken by 64 local photographers. Some of the Exposed DC team and featured photographers will be there, so swing on by to say hello! 

  • After the Fotowalk opening, head to Lost Origins Gallery for the opening of Robin Bell’s “Refractions,” 7-10 p.m.
  • Join Exposed alum Geoff Livingston for a street art and mural photography class offered through Capital Photography Center this Sunday, 8-11 a.m., $99.
  • A commercial photographer shares his experience with “piggyback” shoots, where clients have both video productions and still photography projects occur simultaneously.
  • Thomas Joshua Cooper travels to the world’s most remote places to make a single photograph for his project “The Atlas of Emptiness and Extremity,” encountering all sorts of life-threatening conditions along the way.
  • Jessica Lange talks about her passion for being on the other side of the lens with a new book and gallery show on the horizon.
  • Jennifer Adler shares how she uses her background in science to raise environmental awareness through her photography, with some great insight for all photographers.

Join us for our next happy hour at Bar Deco on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m., which will be a collaboration with Focus on the Story! We thought it’d be neat to feature various local photography organizations and groups during our monthly happy hours and will be kicking that off next week. Hope to see you there! 

  • Head to Big Bear Cafe for Stop Motion Vol 7 on Tuesday, 7-9 p.m. to catch the street photography themed slideshow and pick up some zines.
  • A look at auction data from the past five and a half years shows some interesting trends for photographic works, including photography prices being the most affordable in a long time. 
  • Profoto announced its lineup of compact studio lights…for mobile photography, specifically iPhone 7 or later.
  • The 12th annual Downtown Hyattsville Arts Festival: Arts & Ales is tomorrow, 12-6 p.m. Support local photographers and other artists while sipping on some local brews.
  • Photographer and filmmaker Frederick Paxton plans to take a look at complex systems of government and geopolitics through the lens of sports.
  • Would you like to see photos of a squirrel holding and smelling a flower? Of course you would.
