Thank you again to everyone who made our 14th Annual Photography Show possible and to everyone who came out to see the exhibition! We miss the show already but know you’ll keep the love of local photography alive throughout the year. We encourage you to share your images of the D.C. metro area with us by tagging your Instagram posts with #exposeddc and sharing images to our group on Flickr for a chance to be featured.

  • Capture the Capital Columns at the National Arboretum over sunset and as the moon rises with Capital Photography Center on March 9 from 6:00-8:15 p.m., $99. 
  • Almost 100,000 images by Harlem photographer Shawn Walker have been acquired by the Library of Congress. The collection spans from the 1960s to the present and is the first comprehensive archive of an African American photographer to join the national library.
  • After spending decades examining the effects of war, Marissa Roth found new inspiration in the Atlantic Ocean for her project, “The Crossing,” a departure yet still connected to her work on women and war.
  • B&H is currently offering a $25 gift card when you buy a 12-month Adobe Creative Cloud Photography Plan (20GB) subscription.
  • Exposed alumni Geoff Livingston and Jeffrey Morris chat all about photographing animals, starting with the amazing work of Joel Sartore, on the latest Show Me Podcast.
  • The National Museum of Women in the Arts is offering free admission and programs on Sunday for International Women’s Day. We highly recommend checking out the newly opened photography exhibition Graciela Iturbide’s Mexico.
  • World Press Photo announced the nominees for its 63rd annual photography contest, which received entries from 4,282 photographers from 125 countries who entered a total of 73,996 images this year.

This weekend is your last chance to see the 2020 Exposed DC Photography Show at Touchstone Gallery! The exhibit is open today from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and tomorrow and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. with free admission. We’ll be there on Sunday from 3-5 p.m. for a little closing celebration, and we’d love to see you there! You can purchase a photo from the show at the closing or via our online marketplace at any time. You can also get a copy of our exhibition program featuring all the winning images for $10 or order it online here.

  • Graciela Iturbide’s Mexico, the artist’s most extensive U.S. exhibition in more than two decades with 140 photographs organized around nine themes, opens today at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. On view through May 25.
  • Stop Motion is seeking analog photography from D.C., MD, and VA for their Volume 9 slideshow. 
  • The White House News Photographers Association announced the winners of the Eyes of History Contests earlier this week.
  • Register for photography classes at Glen Echo before they start up in March. Topics covered range from darkroom printing to portfolio building, street photography to writing artist statements and more.
  • The winners of this year’s Underwater Photographer of the Year contest were announced this week, with the top prize going to an image of crabeater seals that had taken up residence in an iceberg in Antarctica.
  • Sign up for Union 206’s special mailing list to be notified about their monthly behind-the-scenes experiences at the studio during an avant-garde fashion editorial shoot for magazine publication.
  • Join Farrah Skeiky tomorrow at Transformer from 2-5 p.m. at the official book release for Present Tense: DC Punk and DIY, Right Now.
  • The New Yorker explores how Santu Mofokeng’s work wrestled with themes of history and land, memory and spirituality, and helped shape the course of South African photography.
  • Chris Suspect will be releasing four books in 2020, starting with Gratuity Included which will be released on March 15. The first edition will have a special design including red film inserts to separate sequences and a red film dust jacket and is available for pre-order at $30.

Opening night for our 2020 show is just a few days away! You still have time to buy advance tickets for the opening reception before ticket prices go up at the door. Come celebrate local photography with us, admire the 43 winning images in person, enjoy an open bar and delicious snacks, and purchase an exhibition program to commemorate the occasion. Exhibit prints will also be available for purchase at first time art buyer prices, so you can add to or even start your very own collection. Get your tickets now, and we’ll see you there!

  • Leah Millis, a WPOW member, was the first woman in 25 years to have the State of the Union floor pool photographer position last week. 
  • The Bauhaus.Photo exhibition at Goethe-Institut Washington features a selection of key works that provide insight into Bauhaus photography and life at the Bauhaus. Exhibition hours are Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through February 26. 
  • A shot of two mice fighting over crumbs on a London Underground platform won a wildlife photography award from London’s Natural History Museum.
  • Sony World Photography Awards announced this year’s finalists, shortlist, and grant recipients, which were selected from over 345,000 images.
  • More than 50 artists and makers will be at Dupont Underground as part of the ArtRave Market on Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., free.
  • Head to Photoworks at Glen Echo Park tomorrow for a reception and gallery talk about the e(sea/land)scape exhibit featuring photos by Stephen Greenberg and David Scherbel, 4-6 p.m.
  • Panasonic teamed up with Dentsu Aegis Network to make a special camera that could help colorblind photographers to see colors accurately as they shoot.
  • While working as a projectionist in an adult cinema in the 1970s and ’80s in London, Bob Mazzer began photographing the people on the tube during his daily commute, more often at night.

Get your tickets now for opening night where you can see all of the winning images in person, enjoy an open bar, and purchase an exhibition magazine as well as any of your favorite photos.

  • AMERICANA by Doug Menuez opens tonight at the Leica Store DC, 7 p.m., free. The works on view provide an intimate glimpse of his ongoing documentation of the contemporary North American cultural landscape.
  • Join AU Museum Director Jack Rasmussen and curator Leah Bendavid-Val as they discuss the life and work of longtime National Geographic photographer Volkmar Wentzel tomorrow, 4 p.m., free.
  • Exposed alum Geoff Livingston chatted with Noe Todorovich about the 2020 Exposed DC Photography Show on his Show Me Podcast. Hear a bit about the selection process, upcoming show, and some of the featured images.
  • Tonight, the Embassy of Argentina is hosting a First Friday Art Walk in which they present three exhibitions, including one featuring panoramic photography by José Andrés Basbus, 6-8 p.m.
  • Photographer Wilson Webb captured the cast of Little Women using the collodion process, a photographic style popular during the mid 1800s. 
  • Interested in your own tintype wet plate collodion? Head to Rhizome DC to get your very own 5×7 portrait for $50 on Sunday, 1-4 p.m. 
  • Aurora hunters have discovered a new type of aurora called “dunes,” which are formed in a thin layer around 60 miles above sea level.

The 14th annual Exposed DC Photography Show opens next month! The beautifully framed exhibit prints are ready to go, and we can’t wait to see them on the walls of Touchstone Gallery. Grab your tickets for opening night now and join us on Wednesday, February 19 to see all the winning images for yourself. And remember, all photos in the exhibit are available for purchase at first-time art-buyer prices.

  • The Washington Post is hiring a staff political photographer to cover U.S. politics, beginning with the 2020 elections. Interested applicants have until Feb. 10 to submit a resume, cover letter, and portfolio.
  • Arlington Arts Center is hosting an opening reception for their Winter 2020 exhibitions tomorrow, 6-9 p.m.
  • Bill Ray, one of the last staff photographers for the weekly Life magazine who documented moments like Marilyn Monroe singing “Happy birthday, Mr. President” and the battleship Oklahoma’s guns firing on the Viet Cong, died earlier this month at the age of 83.
  • The 2020 WPOW and Corcoran Seminar and Portfolio Review is happening on February 8 starting at 9 a.m. Tickets for the speaker portion of the day are still available, and everyone is invited to end the day at happy hour.
  • Some places have instituted photography bans or restrictions in response to over-tourism and bad behavior; CNN explores the approaches taken and what impact they have.
  • Don’t forget to get your tickets for the DC Street Photography Collective (DCSPC) event with Darrow Montgomery at Slash Run on February 20. The deadline to submit work for possible critique by member of DCSPC and Darrow has also been extended to Feb. 5; email up to 5 images at 72 dpi no larger than 2000 pixels on the long edge to thedcspc@gmail.com. 
  • Head to Transformer tomorrow at 5 p.m. for an artist talk with Farrah Skeiky and Cynthia Connolly as they discuss the punk music scene of D.C., documenting live music, self-publishing, and more.
  • Check out the DMV Color exhibit at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in the Betty Boyd Dettre Library and Research Center. The exhibit features the work of women artists of color from the D.C. metro area. As a bonus, admission to the museum is free on the first Sunday of the month.
